Programs

Okinawan Kenpo Rooted in the traditional teachings of Master Seikichi Odo, decendent of Nahabushi Sakiyama, Olathe Karate Academy continues a legacy in the art of Okinawan Kenpo Karate.  This ìinsideî style of self-defense not only utilizes the effectiveness of hands, forearms and elbows, but also fundamentally strong kicking techniques that can be used in real-life situations.
Okinawan Te Ju Jitsu Jujitsu is one of the most ancient of the martial arts in the world, over 2,500 years old. Jujitsu was influenced by many fighting styles, incorporating parts of all of them. The weaponless styles of Jujitsu were integrated into the training of the Samurai, from the eighth to the sixteenth centuries.  The Olathe Karate Academy incorporates Kenpo striking techniques with deadly Ju Jitsu throws, locks, take-downs and submission holds, thus Okinawan Te ñ Ju Jitsu.
Okinawan Kobujitsu (Weapons) Okinawan Kobujitsu (Okinawan Weapons) is the style of weaponry instructed at the Olathe Karate Academy. Training is focused on the following weapons: Bo (staff), Tonfa, Sai, Nun-te Bo, Oar, Kama and Nunchuka.  All students are encouraged to study the Okinawan Weapon system as it greatly enhances ìempty-handî effectiveness.
Sparring (Kumite) Sparring sessions at Olathe Karate Academy are mandatory for intermediate an advanced students.  Beginning students are welcome to attend with permission of Sensei Palmer.  These classes are vital to students developing the necessary skills of actual combat.  Most Kumite sessions will focus on controlled free sparring, NOT point (tournament) sparring.
(Official Olathe Karate Academy safety gear is required to ensure no injuries.)
Arnis
(Short Sticks)
Studying the Philipino art of stick fighting, Arnis, is a great way for students to enhance their overall training. The ìshort sticksî will develop hand speed, strength and fluidity of motion.  Much emphasis is placed on applicable self-defense with a bladed weapon such as a knife.
Power-Fit Kickboxing Power-Fit Kickboxing is a great way to get in shape, lose weight, and tone your body, all in a fun and energetic environment. While listening to music, students are instructed and led in basic punching and kicking exercises.  Much emphasis placed on ìbag workî and bag gloves are required for the class.   Also, abdominal (core) exercises are a key focus in each and every class.   Come feel the burn!
Karate Kubs Olathe Karate Academy’s “Karate Kub” class is a great way for 3 & 4 year olds to be introduced to the martial arts in a fun and energetic class setting.  Not only does this class begin to develop the basic fundamentals of traditional martial arts, but it also helps children with listening, following directions, self-control, etc.
Kid’s Fun Free Play Kid’s Fun Free Play is exactly that…kid’s having fun and playing games!  This class is supervised by Sensei Palmer or Sensei Ashleigh and a privilege for students to attend.  Attendance to the beginning Kenpo or intermediate Kenpo class (before or after respectively) is required.
